Abstract

Mosquito nets (bednets) are used as vector control tools. They remain one of the major components in programmes fighting against malaria. However, their indiscriminate disposal may lead to environment-related challenges. These challenges, including potential human health concerns will be discussed.

The main theme of the 2023 conference is the “” There is increasing concern on how the Global West and North have influenced Africa over the years and the recent rise of Asian giants such as China and India in contesting the monopoly of the traditional powers. The rise of COVID-19 pandemic and effects of climate change have created anxieties on the continent, where vaccination has not taken root and where many are suffering from the shockwaves of climate change. The involvement of China in development projects in Africa is creating anxiety and concern due to various tensions which the projects are creating on the African continent. The involvement of China and India as alternative partners is creating anxiety in traditional powers such as the US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Canada, among others, in geopolitics, economic new order and security implications. This conference seeks to bring new researches that have been conducted on the African continent covering many themes. Africa finds itself at the center of competing interests from the West, North and East. How has Africa handled such influences? In what ways are African countries dealing with increasing Chinese debt? How have these influences affected education, health, mining, agriculture, engineering,, sports, water, tourism, security, religion and other sectors.

Organized and hosted by Multimedia University of Kenya, African Interdisciplinary Studies Association (AISA) and the Centre for Democracy, Research and Development (CEDRED), this 14th International Interdisciplinary Conference will be held on June 26 to 30, 2023 at Nairobi, Kenya. The conference will bring together scholars from all over the world to make presentations on matters that touch on Africa. Each person is allowed to submit a maximum of 3 papers. We encourage authors of papers not to have too many authors. The official language of the conference is English. The conference will consist of twenty colloquia organized along themes.

Background
The Biodiversity Information Development programme aims to establish a community of practice to improve data acquisition and sharing, analysis, and scholarly publication using GBIF data. The project is focused on enhancing national-level capacity to use Biodiversity Information Development (BID) data on endangered bird species in Kenya under three objectives:

1. integrating GBIF Biodiversity Information Development data into conservation decision-making via conservation policy briefs created in collaboration with graduate students, early-career
   scientists, and conservation managers
2. enhancing the use of BID data by graduate students and early-career scientists through the publication of peer-reviewed articles
3. strengthening the capacity of conservation managers to collect policy-relevant biodiversity data through citizen science.

This call engages all eligible graduate students (Masters or Ph.D. levels), early-career scientists,and conservation managers in Kenya to submit their applications to the Center for Biodiversity Information Development (BID-C), Strathmore University.

• Early career scientists: 5 (Former IFS grantees – 3, Open – 2)

Eligibility criteria:

• Applicants must demonstrate research interest in endangered bird species in Kenya.
• The student applicant must be registered in an accredited university (Masters or Ph.D.) and currently in their research years in Ecology, Wildlife Management, Bioinformatics, Biodiversity conservation, Zoology, Environmental science, Geoinformatics, Environmental Policy, Natural Resource Management, or related fields.
• Applicants who are conservation managers must be currently working in one of the Kenyan community conservancies and hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in Biodiversity conservation or related fields.
• Early career scientists should demonstrate a track record of biodiversity-related research supervision, currently working in a university or research institution with at least 2

publications in peer-reviewed journals, and supervised at least 1 student at the graduate level.

• All applicants must demonstrate at least the basic working knowledge of R

Application & Selection Timeline:

Step 1: Applications open on 8th April 2022 and will close on 22nd April 2022
Step 2: Initial shortlisting
Step 3: Panel review of shortlisted applications and selection of the BID fellows
Step 4: Communication to selected BID fellows by 30th April 2022
Step 5: Receipt of the signed letters of agreement from the selected BID fellows
Step 6: Students’ orientation and induction will be conducted on 6th May 2022

2. Submit your letter of motivation.
3. Conservation managers will be required to submit reference letters from the relevant umbrella organization e.g. KWCA, NRT, etc. in addition to the above
4. Student applicants will submit a letter of reference from their lead supervisor in addition to 1&2 above.
5. Student applicants will submit proof of registration as a student e.g. certified university admission letter and transcripts/coursework completion letter (not confined to Kenyan universities).

ABSTRACT

Presenters of papers or posters should send an abstract of not more than 250 words in English, typed in Times New Roman, Font 12, spacing 1.5, margins 1 inch all sides, saved in compatibility mode (97-2003) and be received by 22^nd April, 2022 through the email: info@serek.or.ke. The abstract should highlight the objectives, contents and conclusions. It has to include the Title, author’s name, affiliation institution, email address, phone number and sub-theme.

FULL PAPERS

The full papers for accepted abstracts should be submitted by 27^th April, 2022. The full paper should be 3000 to 5000 words, typing just like abstract. Together with full paper attach power point presentation.

Empirical Papers: Cover page with Title of Paper, Details of the author(s), Abstract (250 words), Key Words (maximum of 8), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation, References.

Theoretical Papers/ Review Papers: Cover page with Title of Paper, Details of the author(s), Abstract (250 words), Key Words (maximum of 8), Introduction, Literature Review, Theoretical Analysis, Application, Conclusion, References.

Posters: Contain brief writ-up of description/ explanation

Referencing use APA style 7^th edition; avoid footnotes. Avoid references in abstract.

Appendices: Should follow references and be identified by capital letters in alphabetical sequence.

CONFERENCE PRODUCTS: Reviewed papers will be published in a book as conference proceedings and the best papers will be considered for publication in the SEREK Journals: The Cradle of Knowledge African Journal of Educational and Social Science Research; and The Authentic Knowledge: African Journal of Pure and Applied Science Research. The best presentation in each category will be awarded certificate of excellence; and all participants will be awarded certificate of participation.
