Project Title: Capacity development for mobilization and use of Biodiversity Information Development (BID) data on endangered bird species in Kenya | BID-AF2020-014-NAC

Background
The Biodiversity Information Development programme aims to establish a community of practice to improve data acquisition and sharing, analysis and scholarly publication using GBIF data. The project is focused on enhancing national-level capacity to use Biodiversity Information Development (BID) data on endangered bird species in Kenya under three objectives: 1) integrating GBIF Biodiversity Information Development data into conservation decision-making via conservation policy briefs created in collaboration with graduate students, early-career scientists, and conservation managers; 2) enhancing the use of BID data by graduate students and early-career scientists through the publication of peer-reviewed articles; 3) strengthening the capacity of conservation managers to collect policy-relevant biodiversity data through citizen science.
This call engages all eligible graduate students (Master or PhD levels), early career scientists and conservation managers in Kenya to submit their applications to the Center for Biodiversity Information Development (BID-C), Strathmore University.

Eligibility criteria:
■ Applicants must demonstrate research interest on endangered bird species in Kenya
■ The student applicants must be registered in an accredited university (Masters or PhD) and
currently in their research year in: Ecology, Wildlife management, Bioinformatics, Biodiversity
conservation, Zoology, Environmental science, natural resource management or related fields
■ Applicant conservation managers must be currently working in one of the Kenyan community conservancies and holders of at least an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in
Biodiversity conservation or related fields
■ Applicant early career scientists should have a demonstrable track record of biodiversity related research supervision, currently working in universities or research institutions with at least 2
publications in peer reviewed journals and supervised at least 1 student at graduate level
■ Student and early career scientist applicants must demonstrate at least the basic knowledge in a statistical software for analysis (knowledge in R is preferred)Application & Selection Timeline:

Step 1: Applications open on Monday, 12th April 2021 and close on Friday, 23rd April 2021
Step 2: Shortlisting and panel review of applications and selection by 28th April 2021
Step 3: Notification of outcome to successful applicants by 30th April 2021
Step 4: Induction and programme commencement for selected BID Fellows 2021 on Monday, 10th May 2021

3. Conservation managers will be required to submit reference letters from the relevant umbrella organization e.g. KWCA, NRT etc. in addition to the above

5. Student applicants will submit proof of registration as a student e.g. certified university admission letter (not confined to Kenyan universities)

Globalization is intimately and intricately intertwined with development in the world today. There are many changes taking place in the world today, spurred on by global forces and influences. The world community has accepted that globalization, with its attendant attributes, is affecting development in many different ways. The breakout of Covid-19 pandemic in Wuhan, China would not have become a global pandemic if it had taken place just a few decades ago. The pandemic has shown that globalization is real because a local corona virus quickly became a pandemic in less than four months, spreading across many parts of the world, infecting millions and killing over one million people. The defeat of Donald Trump by Joe Biden caused ripples on world markets with share indices moving upwards. The death of George Floyd at the hands of police in the USA unified the world against racism with the message “Black Lives Matter’ and became a rallying cry in many places such as sports and games across the world. The world is receiving many effects of climate change causing havoc across the world. This conference seeks to examine some of the global influences on development in all parts of the world. It invites papers from all disciplines to reflect on the areas in which development has been shaped by global forces and how global forces have impacted the world. In what ways does globalization affect development? What lessons do we learn from the effects of the spread of Covid-19 pandemic in the world? What are the causes of climate change and how do they affect the quality of life on earth? How have various governments and the international community responded to the effects of globalization? What are some of the efforts being deployed in saving the world against the effects of climate change? What are some of the efforts being made by various academic disciplines to address changing realities in education, agriculture, engineering, medicine, politics, technology, social issues, culture, water management, gender, youth, children, pastoralist issues, trade, business, commerce, religion, e-commerce, e-learning, among others? These are some of the issues that the conference will be seeking to address.

NETFUND is launching the call for applications for the Green Innovations Award (GIA) Phase IV in February 2020. Put finishing touches on your project or initiative in readiness for application. We aim to identify, recognize and award innovations and best practices in the following areas:

Attainment of 10% tree cover: Technologies and innovations that contribute to attaining the 10% tree cover through rehabilitation and restoration of community, private and public forests. Priority areas: Seedlings production; Silviculture – cultivation and growing of trees; Technologies for planting, monitoring, surveillance and management of forests; Alternatives to biomass as energy for cooking; Alternative subsistence livelihood sources for communities living in and around forests.
Air pollution control: Technologies and innovations that reduce air pollution. Priority areas: Policy and regulations to manage air pollution; Technologies and innovations that prevent or reduce indoor air pollution and emissions from industries and transport sector.
Waste management: Technologies and innovations that promote sustainable waste management. Priority areas: Development and implementation of enabling policy and regulation that promotes energy and resource efficiency in the manufacturing sector and efficient waste management; Technologies and innovations on 4Rs of waste management: Reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery.
Climate resilience: Technologies and innovations that enhance resilience of smallholder farmers and vulnerable groups to climate shocks, including; Climate information and early warning systems - information and communication systems to help small holder farmers, women and other vulnerable groups cope with droughts, floods and other climate change-induced disasters; Climate Smart Agriculture technologies and practices that enhance crop diversification and adoption of improved drought tolerant crops, improve water harvesting, improve irrigation, reduce post-harvest losses and improve uptake of insurance.
Environmental education and awareness: Technologies, innovations and best practices that enhance public education and awareness on: Efficient waste management, protection of forest resources and restoration of degraded forest landscapes (including tree planting and growing), climate change adaptation and mitigation (early warning and climate smart agriculture) and air quality management.

The NETFUND GIA phase IV will be open to Individuals, Community Forest Associations, Water Resource Users Associations, Community Based Organisations, Women Groups, Youth Groups, Persons With Disability, Primary and Secondary Schools, Tertiary Institutions, Counties, Media Houses and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

ISSUING DATE OF THE CALL 11^th DECEMBER 2019
The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) wishes to announce a call for applicants to participate in the 2019/2020 staff mobility programme in the EAC Partner States for member universities. IUCEA is an institution of the East African Community (EAC) whose mission is to promote the strategic and sustainable development of Higher Education systems and research in support of East Africa’s Socio-economic development and regional integration.
The Staff Mobility Programme’s objective is to encourage the sharing of academic human resources, exchange of knowledge, skills and experiences and hence contribute to the EAC regional integration while at the same time helping address capacity gaps in member universities. Participants in the exchange programme are expected to offer their services in teaching, research, external examination, and community engagement.
IUCEA therefore, wishes to invite: Member universities, that wish to receive visiting Staff from universities in the other EAC Partner States, and Academic staff from member universities who would like to offer some or all of the 3 services under the Staff Mobility Programme to universities in the region but outside their home university Partner State or applicants Country of Nationality. The Inter-University Council for East Africa is an institution of the East African Community responsible for higher education in the region. The council’s focus is mainly networking of universities, Research and Quality Assurance. In this regard, the council is seeking to help build the research capacity of universities in the region by equipping researchers with grant writing skills.

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, nongovernmental organization that carries out policy-relevant research on population, health, education, and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. APHRC is committed to strengthening professional and institutional research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) through targeted scientific and methodological seminars, research traineeships and internships, post-doctoral and sabbatical fellowships, scholar exchanges,and supporting doctoral training programs at African universities.

Submissions are invited for research proposals with the potential for development into grant proposals.Successful applicants will be invited for a grant writing workshop where they will be expected to complete the proposals and submit them for funding. Grant writing specialists will be contracted to facilitate the workshop.

The proposal should fulfill the following criteria:

It must seek to solve an EAC regional problem facing more than one Partner State;
It can be in any of the following cluster areas: STEM, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Creative Arts;
It must have principal researchers from at least two Partner States;
Where only two principal researchers are involved, they must be from IUCEA member universities.Researchers from outside the academy may be invited where that number is exceeded;
The research can be completed in one year or less.

The proposal should be submitted in PDF and should contain the following elements:

Project title
Problem statement
Scope of the project
Research methodology
Rationale/significance of the project
A list of possible sources of funding
